Department of Trade, Industry and Competition
Our founding members represent the pinnacle of South African battery manufacturing and innovation.

SABMA was formed to bridge the gap between local excellence and national opportunity, unlocking our country's full industrial potential.South Africa is home to a growing group of world-class battery manufacturers delivering high-quality, bespoke energy storage solutions. Their work showcases deep technical capability and a strong understanding of local needs.
Yet, our national potential is capped. The utility-scale market remains dominated by fully-imported systems, limiting industrial growth and energy security. Unfair competition, like the dumping of old technology, further threatens local manufacturers.
Advocate for Growth
Championing industry-friendly policies, fair tariffs, and local content designation to turn national plans into real opportunities.
Set the Standard
Establishing rigorous standards for quality and safety, promoting ethical business, and ensuring the integrity of the 'Made in SA' mark.
Foster Collaboration
Connecting manufacturers, suppliers, researchers, and government to build a powerful, integrated ecosystem and drive innovation.
Drive Sustainability
Leading the charge in responsible manufacturing and advocating for clear recycling policies to build a circular energy economy.
We are actively engaging with government partners like the dtic and the Localization Support Fund to secure formal designation for locally manufactured batteries in public procurement, ensuring the Renewable Energy Master Plan translates into real, measurable opportunities.
In collaboration with the IDC, we are tackling barriers to entry in the utility-scale BESS market. Through focused workshops and strategic dialogue, we create clear pathways for our members to compete and win on the country's largest projects.
We are working closely with government to navigate complex international standards like the EU's Battery Passport, ensuring South African products are recognized globally for quality and sustainability to open up critical export markets.
Joining SABMA is an investment in your business and our national industry. It's your voice in government, your role in shaping market standards, and your connection to partners who fuel your growth.
